Information & Data Security Manager 2018 - present

Responsible for information and data security for the group. A wide-ranging role encompassing incident management, risk management, network security and data protection. Involves the development and maintenance of information security policies along with the accompanying standards, procedures and guidance.

Key Achievements:
  • Currently implementing an ISO 27001-compliant Information Security Management System. Passed ISO 27001 Lead Implementer exam in April 2018 (88%).
  • Managed a project to obtain PCI-DSS compliance in a very short timeframe, avoiding severe disruption to the business.
  • Introduced a number of initiatives to support the group’s GDPR preparations, including the development of a new information asset register and a process for managing and responding to Subject Access Requests.

IT Project Manager 2016 - 2018

Overall responsibility for a number of high-profile IT projects. Day to day tasks included planning, budgeting, managing and documenting projects. Reported directly to the IT Director and worked closely with upper management, IT Engineers and suppliers.

Key Achievements:
  • Managed the successful roll-out of a new WAN across over 120 dealerships and two new data centres. Involved liaising with multiple suppliers, arranging surveys and civil engineering work, dealing with wayleave applications, regular communication with General Managers around the group and coordinating IT Engineering resource as circuits were brought to life. Also produced weekly progress reports, a range of graphical dashboards and monthly summary reports for consumption at board level.
  • Analysed current and past invoices from multiple suppliers, identifying errors and discrepancies. Successfully negotiated over £140K in credit from an outgoing supplier.

Benfield Motor Group, Newcastle upon Tyne

Lead Systems Developer 2014 - 2016

Managed a team of four developers with responsibility for all IT systems, including: multiple web applications and reporting tools; MS SQL Server databases; bespoke company intranet, and OLAP cube BI system.

Key Achievements:
  • Implementation of a bespoke corporate Intranet to replace a costly SharePoint system, leading to more effective communication and increased staff engagement. Featuring LDAP and AD integration, address book, social interaction, classified advertisements, a document library and a news system with a custom CMS to manage content.
  • Roll-out of a new BI/MI system based on OLAP cube technology, including a large number of management reports incorporating the corporate branding and a range of sophisticated graphical dashboards. Empowered management to make better decisions through advanced analytics and forecasting tools.

Northgate plc, Darlington

IT Development Team Lead 2005 - 2014

Managed a team of five developers with responsibility for all development work, including: building and maintaining multiple websites and the company intranet using a LAMP stack; managing changes to enterprise-level .NET applications used to manage the company vehicle fleet; developing data transfer tools for sharing information with third party companies, and performing SEO (search engine optimisation) for websites throughout the group.

Key Achievements:
  • Designed and built an online vehicle hire system, saving the company £360k per annum in fees to a third party provider. Handles all retail bookings, dealing with annual revenue in excess of £3m.
  • Delivered a vehicle collection and delivery Android app to replace an ageing Windows Mobile 6.5 application. Streamlined the process leading to significant time efficiencies and a dramatic reduction in paperwork.
  • Secured a multi-million pound client by designing and developing a bespoke graphical reporting tool to their exact specifications within very tight time constraints.

Consultant 2005 (six month contract)

Worked on a number of high-profile, business and safety critical systems for many major airlines. Performed analysis, design, coding and testing using C, C++ and mainframe assembler.

Baryll Blue Ltd, Sunderland

Head of Production 2001 - 2005

Led a team of five programmers and was responsible for scheduling and managing all development work. Produced a large number of dynamic Internet, intranet and extranet sites and web browser-based applications for a range of high-profile clients, mainly using PHP and MySQL. Also produced solutions using Java, Perl and XML. Very client-facing and involved in all stages of the project life cycle.

British Airways plc, Newcastle upon Tyne

Analyst Programmer 1998 - 2001

Completed graduate trainee programme before joining the DCS (Departure Control Systems) team as a mainframe assembler programmer. Worked on a wide variety of safety-critical projects. Involved in the biggest IT project ever undertaken by BA, successfully delivering ahead of schedule without any errors reported.

Moved to the eProcurement team, introducing self-service buying through browser-based access to catalogues. Delivered cost savings of £1.2m per annum. Technologies used include Java, JavaScript, XML and Oracle.

Voluntary Work

Coxhoe Village Hall, Coxhoe

Management Committee Member 2013 - 2015

Joined the management committee to help save the village hall from closure due to withdrawal of funding. Created a website to generate interest in the project and to attract more visitors to the centre. Helped secure funding and devoted time and effort to keep the hall running.


British Computer Society

MBCS 2004

Became a full professional member of the British Computer Society in 2004. At Northgate plc, rolled out Corporate BCS membership across the whole IT department (50+ staff). Coached and mentored colleagues to bring everyone up to speed with industry quality standards, legislation and best practice.

Sat the Mensa entrance exam in July 2013 and passed with an IQ in the top 1% of the UK population.
